I just want to add to these comments. To her generosity: I first met Barb at a conference in London. The first thing she ever said to me was “I love the work you’re doing.” As a very junior faculty member, I fell in love with her immediately. I didn’t know her name. I didn’t know that she was the “Barb” that everyone kept talking about throughout the conference. And, then I figured it all out. She was Barb, and I have never mistaken that fact since,
She is singular in her poise, her calm, her sly sense of humor, her knowing-ness about seemingly all things and her sense of humor (did I say that already?).
She is instinctively collegial, kindly showing others when they were not.
She is an all around distinguished, helluva class-act.
I don’t quite know how to say thank-you to someone like her. But, a knowing mentor, a steady, patient, path-breaking scholar and genuinely good person. How many of those do we get to know? And, she’s funny too. But, I said that already.
